Style Theory: A coat is possibly the most important item of clothing to get right in the winter. It is the piece of clothing that can make or break a look or perfectly cover up some dodgy old clothes underneath! It sets the tone for your whole outfit, a beautifully cut coat can elevate the most basic look of a t-shirt, jeans and trainers into something special.
Debenhams have a great range this year, from checks to red to military style coats and jackets, all the key trends this year are covered. I am a huge fan of the checked coat this year, it is the perfect partner to this year's floral dresses giving them a cool, masculine edge.
Coat - J by Jasper Conran now £98
Boots - &Other Sories (old season)
I chose the J by Jasper Conran Check coat..it is beautiful on, fits perfectly on the shoulders and it is great length, I sized down one size for a neat fit. It looks great worn with all black, it allows the coat to really do the talking but it would look just as good with a sweater, blue, ankle length jeans and trainers.
The coat is beautifully finished, details like a back split, a beautiful wine coloured lining and black felt under the collar all make it look expensive and sophisticated. The heritage style check is classy and timeless so can be worn year after year...
I also love this checked coat below in brown tones, so cool, would look fab dressed down with jeans a victorian style blouse and trainers or ankle boots
Red Herring at Debenhams £75 |
I would size down on this coat, it is the kind of coat you need to fit quite neatly to avoid looking too loose. Add a wine coloured oversized scarf and a handbag for a chic, cool look.

The Red Coat
The Inspo..
The colour of this season is without a doubt red, I love these two Debenhams coats which would add a pop of colour to your winter wardrobe.
Miss Selfridge at Debenhams £49As on my last blog post, I am slightly obsessed with red puffer jackets, they look cool with floral dresses or just shoved over a hoody for the school run. Warm, comfortable and practical this is one fab red jacket to add to your wardrobe.
Coast at Debenhams £199 |
This beautiful cashmere and wool blend coat ticks two trends at once, ruffles and red..soft and beautifully made, the perfect dramatic winter coat. It will look as beautiful on Christmas day as it would with leather leggings, a grey hoody and trainers...

The Military Trend
The Inspo..
The military coat and jacket trend is still going strong this year, it is the perfect style to toughen up this year's floral dresses. Military coats and jackets look cool without trying too hard, they are incredibly flattering due to the tailoring and structured look..
Wallis at Debenhams |
I love a navy military coat it looks chic and sophisticated, beautiful paired with tan or dark red accessories, jeans and heeled ankle boots.
Nine by Savannah Miller at Debenhams now £41.30 |
I am a huge fan of the Nine by Savannah Miller range at Debenhams, she designs really beautiful jackets (my leather biker jacket is from the range and I love it, the quality and cut is perfect) This is a great jacket to wear on milder days, or wear with a huge oversized red scarf for a chic, understated but stylish look. I would size down as I find the jackets come up a little big on the shoulders.

I do love a coat and treat myself to new coat (or two!) each year as I know they will be the item of clothing I will wear the most, I tend to walk everywhere so certainly get my wear out of them. I love the black and white checked coat in the photos above, I know I will be wearing it non stop this year.
Are you, like me, a slight coat addict? Which style are you wearing this year? As always I love hearing your thoughts and comments, until next time Fran xx
